The set-up of this activity took so little time to prepare. I already had salt dough made from an activity we’ll be doing later in the week, and the blocks were in my son’s room just waiting to be played with again 🙂 (Looking to add plain, wooden blocks to your play area? Take a look at these ones from Melissa and Doug).
The boys spent a good 30 minutes building, tearing down, and creating with the materials. What did they learn from all of this? Nothing they can verbalize just yet. But the mere exposure and opportunity to work with these materials allowed them to experience principles of building that may be of use to us in the future. Through play, we are setting a foundation that we can build on as they grow.
How do you incorporate S.T.E.M. activities in your kids’ playtime? Since these play ideas don’t some naturally to me, I can use all the ideas I can get! 🙂
