“I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee…”
Do you know this classic song? I’ll be honest, I never sang it as a kid. I was first introduced to it by a friend and when I first heard it I thought, “eww- what a gross song!” (I clearly didn’t appreciate it because I didn’t have kids yet) 😉 Now that I have kids, I understand the appeal. We even had a playdate where we made these squishy balloon bumblebees from the Inspired Treehouse (these were one half of my inspiration for this activity! The second half of my inspiration came from these Campfire Ghost Hands from The Chaos and the Clutter– my kids had ooey, gooey, messy fun making these!)
If you’re not familiar with the song, here it is for your preschooler’s pleasure:
“I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee,
won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee,
OUCH! It stung me!
I’m squishing up a bay bumblebee,
won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
I’m squishing up a baby bumblebee,
EWWW! It’s yucky!”
I’ve also heard other verses added, like “I’m licking up my baby bumblebee” and “I’m wiping off my baby bumblebee.” Feel free to add those in as well, after all, they go perfectly with these squished up bumblebee marshmallows!
How to make Baby Bumblebee Marshmallows
First, You’ll want to gather a couple supplies:
- Large marshmallows
- Food markers
Have your kids wash their hands very well and then invite them to draw bumblebee stripes and faces on their marshmallows (using the food markers).
Kids will need to use a light touch when drawing since the marshmallows are squishy under pressure of the markers.
Next have your kids cradle the marshmallow bumblebee in their hands and start singing!
Squishing the bumblebee brings out the most awesome preschool grossed-out (but secretly super excited) faces!
This would make a great campfire song and activity (especially because there are always more marshmallows than we need after making s’mores!). Just make sure to have water and/or a moist cloth to wipe off those bumblebees when you’re through 😉
