Easy Chores that Preschoolers Can Actually Help With

Maybe it’s just me, but my kids love spray bottles. They are constantly playing with them and running around the house spraying everything in sight (including the dog…eeek!). I usually just let them spray the windows and wipe them off with a paper towel, and that’s when it hit me. This is a chore! This is a job that my kids can actually help with (and they even enjoy doing!)

If your kids are anything like mine, they no doubt love spray bottles, too. Take advantage of their interest and start teaching them about cleaning the house (Lord knows we need all the help we can get!).

To help get them started, I’ve put together a list of jobs that preschoolers can do on their own!

Vacuum

Just be aware of the possible strain it may have on their back to ensure they don’t do it for too long. You can even take it a step further and have your kids vacuum non-carpeted rooms such as kitchen floors using a floor vac. You may not get the prettiest carpet lines from their assistance, but you will get help and teach kids how to contribute to the household. I’ll take that over carpet lines any day of the week! Mop the floors

If your kids love using or playing with spray bottles, then mopping the floors can actually be a fun job for them. Let them go to town on your hardwood and tile floors with a steam mop shark. Any non-carpet surface is a great place for them to clean away.

Take out the trash

For young kids, taking out the kitchen trash may still be a few years away…but preschoolers can still help work up to this in smaller tasks! Think emptying the bathroom waste basket, the recycling bin, or the shredded paper container. Your kids can probably even handle rolling the trash cans to the curb (my preschooler loves this job!).

Wipe down chairs, tables, and counters

Give your kids a rag and a bucket and let them wipe down the counters, tables, and chairs. This is one of the easiest jobs out there! It will not only make your home sparkle, but it’s one less thing you have to worry about.

Dust

Dusting is another easy task your kids can handle. “Feather duster” or “squeegee” is just another word for toy to some children. Let them dust some of the lower areas like tables and mirrors if they can reach. This will help knock out most of the dusting for you.

Rinsing dishes

My kids love using the little sprayer in the sink. I took advantage of that interest and invited them to spray their plates after they eat. They think it’s an awesome privilege and I think it’s an awesome skill to start learning!

Pairing socks

Warm laundry that just came out of the dryer is already something my kids are attracted to (see: jump into the pile), may as well get them to help with it as well! I actually hate this chore, but it’s a great matching task for preschoolers! Not to mention it works on fine motor skills, so I’m including this task as a homeschooling activity as well 😉
