The rain plopped down on our umbrella and the sweet smell of wet dirt filled the air (I can’t be the only one who loves the smell of rain, can I?) Since I wasn’t quite in the mood to go splashing around in puddles just yet, I decided to bring the fun back inside and put together a fun invitation to play for Cannon.
We made the rainbow rice a couple of days ago and I stored it to use later. Here’s the recipe we used for the rice:
Recipe for Rainbow Rice
1 cup of rice
tsp. of vinegar
desired amount of food coloring (depending on intensity of the color you want!)
Put it all in a ziplock bag and let your little munchkin help you mix it up! Lay out the rice on wax paper or in a shallow dish to thoroughly dry before playing…
Impatient like me? Try this Fast drying tip:
Put the rice in a glass casserole dish and pop it in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes to dry it out quickly 🙂 Works like a charm!
I know Cannon would have been perfectly happy playing with just the rainbow rice again, but I was in the mood for a change of pace so I created this extra fun sensory activity for him to explore:
I simply added shaving cream to the center of the plastic bowl and let him explore it with the rice 🙂 It was a whole new sensory experience for him (he has played with both rice and shaving cream in separate play activities, but never had them together). The combination of the fluffy shaving cream texture coupled with the small bits of rice was so interesting to him! He kept trying to mix and squish it up but the shaving cream has a sort of elusive texture that collapses in his hands (unlike play dough which is much more firm). I love how intently he explored the properties of the two elements together. Definitely something I will take out for him again! Hope you will try this with your little ones and let me know how they enjoy it!
