Play-Doh is such a playtime staple, but most [toddler] parents want a dough that is a little more “sensory safe”. That’s where salt dough comes in. While it may not taste great, it’s safe to test. Cannon does in fact taste test it every time we use it (it only takes a small nibble before he realizes it’s not so yummy) If you’ve never introduced dough to your tot, salt dough is the perfect place to start.

Here’s the recipe we use:

Salt Dough Recipe

1/2 cup of salt
1/2 cup of water
1 cup of flour

Mix the dry ingredients first and add the water a little at a time (you my not need it all). Make sure to knead the dough well before you decide to add more water! This dough is slightly on the sticky side, but it should not feel slimy or wet.

There are abundant homemade dough recipes out there (have you seen our galaxy dough?), but this one is so quick (no cooking involved!), and I always have the ingredients on hand. The pitfalls of this dough is that it is slightly sticky, and has a grainy texture (from the salt crystals). That being said, I still choose this dough for a quick easy recipe 🙂

I can’t even count how many activities I have pinned that use homemade dough (I even have an entire pinterest board dedicated to this topic!) The great thing about them is they are all different and exciting, despite using the same main play ingredient: dough.

I decided to offer Cannon an opportunity to play with dough while also offering another classic toy- blocks. Salt dough was the perfect choice for this activity because the grainy/sticky texture make it a great imitation of mortar!

There are very few activities that can entertain my toddler for an entire hour- this is one of those activities though!

I love offering him open-ended play that stimulates his imagination (he later decided to use one of the wooden rods as a car driving through the yellow tunnel)! I can’t wait until baby Hunter is old enough to enjoy this type of play 🙂
