I put together a simple invitation to play for my son Cannon the other day. When I noticed he was really interested in writing and coloring, I thought of how I can change up the normal crayons and coloring book playtime and turn it into something unique. That’s when I came up with the idea of laying out markers and a mirror. The hubby and I have been leaving love notes on the bathroom mirror for a while now (it’s fun to wake up and see a new silly drawing or a simple “I love You” reflecting from my bathroom mirror), so I thought I would extend that simple joy for my son.

I laid out a small mirror (I got this one from the 99 cent store) and a few capped markers (regular markers worked ok, but I liked the bold color of the low odor dry-erase markers better). Once he chose his color and I helped him uncap it and showed him how to color on the mirror. The first time we did the activity, he wasn’t too interested so I tabled it for another day. The second time he didn’t want me to ever put it away! We had fun drawing circles and lines all over his reflection (then he tried drawing them on his actual skin!) After circles and scribbles, he REALLY enjoyed making polka dots all over the mirror 🙂

A word of caution though: this is not an activity you will be able to step away from unless you don’t mind markings on your floors and walls 😉

All in all, I’d say this activity was a hit! Next time we do it I think we will use the markers to circle certain features in his reflection (circle your eyes…now show me your nose…) There are really so many possibilities with this activity! I can picture taking the materials outside on a beautiful day and drawing a rainbow on the reflection of the sky (hmmm…maybe not…the sun would be way too bright for this! but it sounds nice, doesn’t it? ;-).

How would you extend this activity for different themes? I’d love to hear your ideas!
