One of my hobbies is going thrifting and antiquing (anyone with me?!?). If you didn’t know that this was classed as a hobby then you have not been looking into the various Hobbies for women out there for us to peruse. On one trip I found a vintage set of Matryoshka dolls that I fell in love with! They came home with me and my kids fell in love with them too…not so good. While they wanted to know the history behind the dolls, such as where they came from, I was a little worried that they would take too much of an unwanted interest in them. They were slightly rough with the delicate vintage dolls and I knew they would needed a set of their very own. I started by looking for sets on Amazon (this fun animal set landed in my cart first), but I realized that I wanted to try my hand at making my own set.
Note: I am not at all artistic, but I thought it would be more fun to DIY the project than to buy a ready made one 🙂
Supplies
- Unfinished Matryoshka dolls
- Paint (I used Sharpie paint pens)
Going back to my unartistic side, I really had no idea where to start when I made these. I looked up some inspiration and loved the updated look of these ones from Adventures in a Box, and these “Men Folk” Nesting dolls from Sketch inc. Once I had my inspiration, I just started painting (well, drawing really since I used paint pens instead of paint brushes).
Once I got stared painting I just kept going until they were done (that’s one thing I love about DIY projects – you just get lost in the activity and enjoy the process along the way!)
And since I was suing paint pens versus traditional paint, they tried almost instantly (so my kids were able to enjoy them right away too!)
Nesting dolls are a great way for kids to explore size relationships and matching. I know my kids like to play pretend with them and hide things inside of their “bellies” too! You can find more great learning activities to do with Matryoshka dolls over at The Educator’s Spin on it.
I’m going to buy an extra set and gift them to my 10 year old niece for her birthday, I know she’ll have a great time creating her own unique set of dolls! Will you be making a set of nesting dolls for your kids? Share pictures with us on Instagram! We love seeing all your creative ideas!
Oh my goodness!!! These are so creative and adorable.
